1977: Age six: dad hears talent
She's six years old when her father hears something in her singing that stops him cold. It isn't cute, it's pitch-perfect. From that moment, the family's living room becomes a rehearsal space.

1980: Singing at family restaurant
By 1980, the Quintanilla family runs a Tex-Mex restaurant called Papa Gayo's, and Selena sings there with her brother and sister. Diners eat enchiladas while a grade-schooler works the room. It's her first stage, and the tips are the applause.

1981: Restaurant closes, family relocates
Then the oil recession hits Texas, and the restaurant closes. The family loses the business and moves to Corpus Christi, starting over with almost nothing. Music stops being a hobby and becomes the plan.

Early 1980s: Playing weddings and street corners
As Selena y Los Dinos, they play wherever anyone will let them. Street corners, weddings, quinceañeras, county fairs, hauling their own gear in and out. Some nights the crowd is a hundred people, some nights it's whoever walks past.
1984: First LP for Freddie Records
In 1984, the band records its first LP for Freddie Records. She's a teenager standing in front of a studio microphone with the whole family behind the glass. Their name is finally pressed onto vinyl.
1984: Learning Spanish lyrics phonetically
There's one problem: she grew up speaking English. So she learns her Spanish lyrics phonetically, sound by sound, memorizing words she doesn't fully understand yet. She sings them so convincingly that no one can tell.
1980s: Rejected by Texas venues
Booking shows is another fight. Texas venues turn her away again and again, because a young woman fronting a Tejano band isn't what promoters expect. She keeps showing up anyway.

1989: Signed by EMI Latin
In 1989, she takes the stage at the Tejano Music Awards, and record executive José Behar is in the audience. What he sees is enough to sign her to EMI Latin on the spot. The corner-gig years are over.
