Shakira before she was famous
Rejected by her school choir. Then the world sang.
1977: Born in Barranquilla, Colombia
In 1977, in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla, Colombia, a girl is born and named Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll. No stage, no spotlight, just a coastal town of heat and salt air. The name will one day fit on a marquee, but for now it's simply a family's newest child.

1981: Age four: writes first poem
At four years old, she writes her first poem and calls it La Rosa de Cristal — The Crystal Rose. Before she can play a single chord, she's already discovering that words can be arranged like music. The page is her first stage.

1985: Age eight: writes first song
When she's eight, an aunt gives her a guitar. She turns that gift into her very first song, Gafas Oscuras — Dark Glasses. The instrument is bigger than she is, but the songwriting has already begun.
1985: Father goes bankrupt
That same year, her father's business goes bankrupt. The family has to let go of comforts they'd taken for granted and adjust to a far more modest life. At eight years old, she learns that everything can change in a season.
Childhood: Rejected from school choir
She auditions for her school choir and is turned down. The teacher says her vibrato is too strong — that she sounds too much like a goat. The voice that's too big for a classroom will one day be too big for a stadium.
1987: Wins local TV talent contest
At ten, she enters a local television talent contest in Colombia — and wins. The same voice a choir rejected is now being broadcast into living rooms. It's her first taste of an audience that says yes.

Late 1980s: A producer opens a door
Then she meets a theater producer named Monica Ariza. Ariza believes in the teenager enough to help arrange an audition with Sony Music Colombia. One introduction turns a local talent into a real possibility.
1990-1991: Teenager records debut album
Still a teenager, she signs with Sony Music Colombia and records her debut album, Magia. She's in a professional studio, singing songs she wrote herself. Everything about it feels like the beginning of something huge.

1991: Debut album sells 1,200 copies
Magia arrives in stores — and almost nobody buys it. Around 1,200 copies sell in all of Colombia. Her first album as a signed artist is, by every commercial measure, a failure.

1993: Second album also flops
In 1993 she tries again with a second album, Peligro. It fails commercially too. Two records into her career, the girl who once won a TV contest at ten is still waiting for the world to listen.
