Bruce Springsteen before he was famous

Before the stadiums, Bruce Springsteen was a kid born in Long Branch and raised in Freehold, New Jersey, watching Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show and deciding that music was the thing worth chasing. This short artist biography follows that music origin story through the small rooms where it actually started: in 1964 he was playing for local audiences with the Rogues at venues including the Elks Lodge in Freehold, and in 1965 he joined the Castiles, where local supporters Tex and Marion Vinyard helped him step forward as lead guitarist and singer. The turn came in May 1972, when he auditioned for Columbia Records talent scout John Hammond, the man who had signed Bob Dylan, and walked away with a Columbia contract.
