Late 1960s-1972: Band after band, still unknown
Through the late sixties into 1972 he cycles through band after band: Steel Mill, Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, the Sundance Blues Band, the Bruce Springsteen Band. Different names, different line-ups, the same relentless apprenticeship on small stages.

In May 1972 he sits down to audition for Columbia Records talent scout John Hammond. Just a guitar, a voice, and a handful of songs in a quiet room.
